Mayakovsky & Theo

The best man I ever knew was

A communist

He had a black kelpie called Theo

We smoked dope and

Sang songs of Iggy Pop

He spoke of his communist days

In Calcutta

I talked of my search for God

It was the best of times-

Soccer with his crazy

Friends on Ormond Oval

Retiring to the Dalton Bar

Getting drunk laughing madly

Reciting Mayakovsky

He was my Anthony Quinn

My Zorba in Yarraville

He taught me to say

Yes to life

Yes to war and peace within

Yes to anger and to hate

Yes to madness and to pain

Yes to beauty and to ugliness

Yes to suffering and to joy

Yes to love in all its forms

Yes to your last dying breath

Yes to life and

Yes to death

Otherwise life isn’t worth a

Goddamn thing!
